If you argue with someone about something, you discuss it with them, with each of you giving your different opinions.

  • They are arguing over foreign policy. (彼らは外交政策について議論している)

★ポイント★
argueは「節度ある議論」というニュアンスのdiscussとは異なり非友好的で、時に口論に近く、相手を説き伏せようとするニュアンスがある。感情的な（とげとげしい）「議論」にはdispute、公的な問題の賛否を問う討論にはdebateが近い。

If you argue for something, you say why you agree with it, in order to persuade people that it is right. If you argue against something, you say why you disagree with it, in order to persuade people that it is wrong.

  • I argued the case for an independent central bank. (独立した中央銀行が必要だという主張を支持した)
  • The report argues against tax increases.　(この報告書は増税に反対の立場を取っている)

★ポイント★
・「〜に賛成する（支持する）論を立てる」（for）、「〜に反対する論を立てる」（against）の意味もある。
・上記第二例のように、無生物主語で用いられることも多い。その場合、「〜の証拠となる（を示す）」というニュアンスになることがある。(argue:to show; prove; imply; indicate−Webster)
