1. If you assume that something is true, you imagine that it is true, sometimes wrongly.

  • If the package is wrapped well, we assume the contents are also wonderful. (包装が良ければ、中身も良いと考えるものだ）
  • If mistakes occurred, they were assumed to be the fault of the commander on the spot. (ミスが起きたら、それは現場責任者の責任とみなされた）

★「決めてかかる」「思い込む」ニュアンス(take for granted or without proof―Random House Webster)
★assume that..., assume A to〜のほか、I assume so, too. （私もそう思います―ランダムハウス英語辞典）といった表現も可能です。

2. If someone assumes power or responsibility, they take power or responsibility.

  • Mr Cross will assume the role of Chief Executive with a team of four directors. (Cross氏は4人の役員を率いてCEOに就任する見込みだ）
  • If there is no president, power will be assumed by the most extremist forces. (大統領が不在になれば、権力は過激派の手に渡るだろう）
