「言う」「話す」のボキャブラリー 19 ― imply
1. If you imply that something is the case, you say something which indicates that it is the case in an indirect way.
- "Are you implying that I have something to do with those attacks?" she asked coldly. (「私がその襲撃に関わっていると言いたいのですか」と彼女は冷たく言った)
- She felt undermined by the implied criticism. (彼女はその暗黙の批判によってひどく傷ついた)
★suggest, hintも同じ意味がある。
2. If an event or situation implies that something is the case, it makes you think it likely that it is the case.
- Exports in June rose 1.5%, implying that the economy was stronger than many investors had realized. (6月の輸出高は1.5%増加し、投資家が考えていたよりも経済が好調であることを示した)
★suggestにも同じ意味がある。
そのほか、「(当然のこととして)…を含む」「必ず伴う」(involve)、「(単語が)…を意味する」(mean, signify)という意味もあります。
- Speech implies a speaker. (言語行為には当然話し手がかかわる)
- War implies hostile acts. (戦争とは敵対行為のことである)
