argue:明確な理由を挙げて考えや意見を述べる

If you argue that something is true, you state it and give the reasons why you think it is true.

  • His lawyers are arguing that he is unfit to stand trial. (弁護士集団は彼には責任能力がないと主張している)

(参考)If someone stands trial, they are tried in court for a crime they are accused of. 

  • He was found to be mentally unfit to stand trial.

以下、ほかの用法。

If one person argues with another, they speak angrily to each other about something that they disagree about. You can also say that two people argue. 

  • The committee is concerned about players' behaviour, especially arguing with referees. (当委員会は、選手の態度、とりわけ審判に食ってかかるような態度について懸念している)

自動詞+withで「〜と言い争う」という意味

If you tell someone not to argue with you, you want them to do or believe what you say without protest or disagreement.

  • Don't argue with me. (私に逆らうな)

★ポイント★
not to argue with〜の形で「〜に逆らわない(反抗しない)ようにする」という意味
