(3)finally
(a) 「最終的に」の意味で、一連の事態の推移の中で、最終段階がどうなったかを言及している。この点でin the long runとは異なる。

  • Finally, the report mentions a decline in profits. (その報告書の最後には、収益の減少について書かれている)
  • “And with each rain it gets colder until finally it snows.” (雨が降るたびに寒くなり、いつしか雪に変わる)

★after allとの比較

  • We’ve finally (×after all) decided to go away for the New Year (いろいろあったけど、結局は正月休暇に出かけることに決めた)
  • So you didn’t have to pay a parking fine after all (×finally) ! (結局、君は駐車違反の罰金を払わずに済んだんだ)

(b)「ようやく」「やっと」。この意味では、中位(mid-position)に置かれることが多い。

  • I had the safe made specially, and it’s finally stood me in good stead. (特別に作らせた金庫がようやく役に立った)

達成や決断に言及する動詞（たとえば、succeed, decide）と用いられて、そこに至るまでに困難や迷いがあったことを含意する。

  • “after a long time and especially after much doubt or difficulty” ―Activator
  • Jim finally decided, after much thought, to leave his job. ―Activator
  • Noriko was finally able to work up enough courage to approach the students at the recruiting desk. ―Johnson, Green Grapes


(4) in the end：finallyと同様、一連の出来事の結末や、思案の末の結論について述べるのに用いられ、最終的にどうなったのか、どうなるのかについて言う。

  • I left in the middle of the film. Did they get married in the end? ―Swan
  • Friends are friends, but in the end the most important thing is yourself. ―Mathy, Wonderful Fool
  • You can’t escape―wherever you go the police will find you in the end. ―Activator
