本日はconceiveの用法を見ていきます。
代表的には、conceive (of) A/〜ing, conceive (of) A as B, conceive that〜などの形で使われます。
コロケーションが豊富なので、用例を理解して使いこなせるようにしましょう。


1. If you cannot conceive of something, you cannot imagine it or believe it.　

  • I just can't even conceive of that quantity of money. (その金額がどれほどのものなのか想像すらできない）

★「想像する」から「理解する」という意味にもなります。主に否定文で使われます。To apprehend mentally; understand: couldn't conceive the meaning of that sentence.(American Heritage)


2. If you conceive something as a particular thing, you consider it to be that thing.　

  • Elvis conceived of himself as a ballad singer.（エルヴィスは自分がバラード歌手だと思っていた）

★that節や疑問詞節が続く場合もあります。

  • To be of the opinion that; think: didn't conceive such a tragedy could occur.(American Heritage)
  • I can hardly conceive what it must be like here in winter.(Longman)


3. If you conceive a plan or idea, you think of it and work out how it can be done.　

  • He conceived of the first truly portable computer in 1968.（彼は196
