If you address a problem or task or if you address yourself to it, you try to understand it or deal with it.　

  • Mr King sought to address those fears when he spoke at the meeting.(キング氏は、会議で発言した際、その懸念事項に対処しようとした)　
  • Throughout the book we have addressed ourselves to the problem of ethics.(本書の中で、我々は倫理という問題に取り組んできた）

★「理解し、対処しようとする」という意味が基本ですが、try to addressを「解決しようとする」と訳せることもあります。
★devote effort to somethingと定義されている辞書もあり、Collinsでは反意語をignore(=disregard on purpose)としている点が興味深いところです。

If a letter, envelope, or parcel is addressed to you, your name and address have been written on it. 　

  • Applications should be addressed to: The business affairs editor.

★「手紙など」＋is addressed to＋「人」：「人宛に手紙が届く」

ほかに、address A as Bで「AをBと呼ぶ」の形もありますが、用例は省略します。
