affirm：（証拠や信仰に基づいて）あくまでも真実であると確信して公に言明する

If you affirm that something is true or that something exists, you state firmly and publicly that it is true or exists. (FORMAL)　

★ポイント★
以下、Websterの用例より

  • to affirm one's loyalty to one's country (祖国に忠誠を誓う)
  • He affirmed that all was well. (彼は万事順調だと断言した)

If an event affirms something, it shows that it is true or exists. (FORMAL)　

  • Everything I had accomplished seemed to affirm that opinion. (私が成し遂げたことは、どれもその見解を支持するものに思えた)

(=confirm, ratify)

★ポイント★
この意味では「認める」「肯定する」などの訳が可能。上記の例では「支持する」と訳すこともできる。
affirm は自分の陳述が真実だと認める(state positively)ときに、confirm は自分以外の真実を認める（give approval to）ときに用いる（ランダムハウス英和、Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary）
