If you assert your authority, you make it clear by your behaviour that you have authority.

• After the war, the army made an attempt to assert its authority in the south of the country. (戦後、軍は南部地域で管轄権を行使しようとした)

If you assert your right or claim to something, you insist that you have the right to it.　
–…nonsmokers began asserting their right not to be harmed by tobacco smoke. (非喫煙者は、たばこの煙で健康を害されない権利を主張し始めた)

★ポイント★
「（権利などを）主張する」(maintain, defend)、「（権力を）行使する」（exercise）という意味もある。assert oneselfは「自己主張する」という意味。
