先日扱ったallege, stateに加えて、類語としてaver, holdを比較・研究。以下Random House Webster's Unabridged Dictionaryより。

MAINTAIN, ASSERT, AVER, ALLEGE, HOLD, STATE all mean to express an opinion, judgment, or position. (MAINTAIN, ASSERT, AVER, ALLEGE, HOLD, STATEは、ある意見や判断、立場を表明することを意味する)
※maintainとassertについては前回扱ったため省略します。

  • AVER, like ASSERT, implies confident declaration and sometimes suggests a firmly positive or peremptory tone; in legal use AVER means "to allege as fact": to aver that the evidence is incontrovertible.

(AVERは、ASSERTと同様、確信を持って宣言するというニュアンスがあり、断固とした確信や有無を言わさぬ語調を表すこともある。法律用語では「事実であると主張（証言）する」という意味：証拠は明白だと証言する）

  • ALLEGE indicates a statement without evidence to support it, and thus can imply doubt as to the validity or accuracy of an assertion: The official is alleged to have been unaware of the crime.

(ALLEGEは、証拠を示さずに言明することを指す。そのため、主張の信頼度や正確度に関して疑惑を意味する場合がある：その役員はこの犯罪について知らなかったと言われている）

  • HOLD means simply to have or express a conviction or belief: We hold these truths to be self-evident; She held that her rights had been violated.

(HOLDは、確信や意見を持っている（または表明する）ことを示すのみである：これらの事実は自明であると考える；彼女は権利が侵害されたと主張した）

  • STATE usually suggests a declaration that is forthright and unambiguous: He stated his reasons in clear, simple language

(STATEは、率直で明快な言明を指すことが多い：彼は明快かつ平易な言葉で理由を述べた）
