If someone is mentioned in writing, a reference is made to them by name, often to criticize or praise something that they have done. (Collins)

  • I was absolutely outraged that I could be even mentioned in an article of this kind. (この手の記事に名前が載ったことで、私は本当に憤慨した)
  • to cite formally for a meritorious act or achievement: He was mentioned in dispatches from the war zone. (Webster) (彼は前線からの特別勲功者として氏名が掲げられた)

If someone is mentioned as a candidate for something such as a job, it is suggested that they might become a candidate. 

  • His appointment is a complete surprise -- he has never been mentioned as a front runner.(彼の指名はまったくのサプライズである。候補に挙がってさえもいなかったのだから)
